What should you look for in a reflexologist?
If you have never used a reflexologist before, but like the idea of trying out reflexology, it is worth taking time to consider a few aspects before deciding which reflexologist to choose. Unless you already know a reflexologist practitioner, or have had one recommended to you, it can be hard choosing the right reflexologist to suit your needs.
Obviously, one of the first aspects that you should consider is price. Location is also important. Find out whether a reflexologist works from their own practice, or whether they may be willing to visit you in your home. Some people like the idea of having the treatment in their own home environment.
When contacting a reflexologist, ask them about their qualifications and how long they have been in practice. If they have a website, this information may be available online. Reflexology is unregulated in the UK, which means that, essentially, anyone can set up business. Choose a reflexologist that has taken more than 100 hours of study and has experienced over 100 hours of practical work. If the reflexologist belongs to any industry bodies or relevant institutes, this is favourable. Make sure that the practitioner is also insured and has first aid skills.
If you have specific needs that you want addressing from your reflexology session, enquire whether the reflexologist has had any experience with this before, what the outcomes were, and how they can help you. Some reflexologists use treatments for the foot or the hand, so if you have a particular preference, find out what the practitioner can offer. Although foot reflexology is more common, hand reflexology can be useful for those suffering from leg problems. A practitioner who uses hand reflexology may also be able to teach you some basic techniques that you could use yourself, in between treatment sessions.
Reflexology should make you feel relaxed, so it is important that you feel comfortable with the person who is giving you treatment. A good reflexologist should also make a thorough health assessment before beginning any treatment, so they can tailor the techniques and approaches used to your specific needs.
